How to Make a Good Teacher

What matters in schools is the teachers. Fortunately, teaching can be taught. The best way to learn how to make a good teacher is by studying what the best teachers do. This was the approach I took when I completed my doctorate in education. I read everything I could find on the topic, including books, research studies, and articles. I interviewed several principals, administrators, instructional support personnel, and instructional coaches to get their perspectives. Here are some of the things that the best teachers do.

1) They have high expectations for all students.

The best teachers believe that all students can learn and reach their full potential. They set high expectations for all students and work hard to help them meet them. They know that some students will need more help than others, but they never give up on any student.

2) They create a positive learning environment.

The best teachers create a positive learning environment in their classrooms. They establish rules and procedures that are fair and consistent. They treat their students with respect and show them that they care about them as individuals. Students feel safe and comfortable in their classrooms and know they are there to learn.

3) They are effective communicators.

The best teachers are effective communicators. They know how to present information in a way that is clear and easy for students to understand. They use verbal, nonverbal, and written communication effectively. They also know how to listen to their students and understand their needs.

4) They are lifelong learners themselves.

The best teachers are lifelong learners themselves. They are always looking for new ways to improve their teaching methods and stay up-to-date on the latest education research. They are also willing to take risks and try new things in their classrooms.

These are just a few of the things that the best teachers do. If you want to be a good teacher, start by studying what the best teachers do and then model your teaching after theirs. You may not be able to do everything they do, but you can certainly strive to reach the same level of excellence in your career.
